“Best Friends” (Courier Publishing, 30 pages) written by Doug Kauffmann and illustrated by Cherry Smith, is a tender story of two brothers, one 19 years old and the other 9, who spend a memorable afternoon at the beach before the older brother prepares to return to his studies at college.
They do all their favorite things: eat fried chicken, drink Cokes, build a sand castle, and toss a football. Later, in the quiet of the day, they have a brothers-only conversation about the love of Jesus. They are best friends, and neither wants the day to end.
Kauffmann is the retired pastor of Connie Maxwell Baptist Church on the campus of Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries in Greenwood, where he served for 20 years. He is an adjunct professor of religion at Lander University and the author of two previous books: “The Best Heroes” and “Tobias’s Story: The Life and Civil War Career of Colonel Tobias B. Kaufman.”
Smith teaches preschool in Greenwood. A visual arts graduate of Lander University, she is a featured speaker at schools and libraries and is the author/illustrator of two books: “Juniper Jupiter: World’s Greatest Juggler” and “Sleepwalk Jones.”
All proceeds from “Best Friends” (suggested donation: $12 for softcover, $20 for hardcover) will support Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries. To order, visit https://conniemaxwell.com/bestfriendsbook.
“Courier Publishing exists as an arm of the Baptist Courier to put biblically sound books in the hands of pastors and churches to equip them to be faithful stewards of the gospel and the inspired, inerrant, Word of God for this generation and those to come.”
