Have you ever been aware of something you should do but just never gotten around to doing that thing? Maybe it’s the home repair project, the take at the office, the conversation with a spouse-we all have items that show up on our to-do list and that we never cross off.

Unfortunately, the same can be true in our spiritual lives as we seek to follow Jesus. There are assignments God gives that we know we should obey. When we hear sermons or read Scripture, God’s Spirit presses us to action. We confess our neglect and apathy and make up our minds that this time we are going to follow through, only to find ourselves back in that same place a few months later.

There are many reasons for our disobedience. There’s no book that is going to make up for a lack of intentionality on our part or busyness that tends to distract us from the things that matter. But there is one facet of our neglect that we can address. Sometimes we don’t follow through with something we know we should do because we don’t have a plan.

Jesus’ famous Great Commission gives clear marching orders to His people. All disciples of Jesus are to invest their lives in making other disciples of Jesus. We do this by going to them, sharing the gospel with them, witnessing their conversion and baptism, and helping them grow to obey all things Jesus teaches (Matt 28:18–20). We know we should, yet many don’t do this very thing. From Generation to Generation is written to combat that trend by providing normal Christians with a path for disciple-making. We will follow the path laid out by the Apostle Paul in the second chapter of his letter to Titus in an effort to help Christians do more than know they should make disciples, but to actually know how.
