While the world of the English Reformers and that of the English Puritans may well be, to some extent, foreign countries, they do, nonetheless, contain rich treasures of wisdom for our contemporary walk with God. Our focus is upon four remarkable Christians — Hugh Latimer, a gospel preacher and bishop; Katherine Willoughby, the so-called Puritan Duchess, who used her wealth for the furtherance of the gospel; William Bridge, the Norfolk Puritan, who was a stout advocate of congregational church government; and Hercules Collins, a London Baptist pastor who played a key role in the establishment of Baptist witness in England. These four short studies are a great reminder that Christian biography is a great resource for living faithfully in the present day.

Michael A.G. Azad Haykin is professor of church history and biblical spirituality at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and also the director of the Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies. He also teaches history at Redeemer University, Ancaster, Ontario.

“Courier Publishing exists as an arm of the Baptist Courier to put biblically sound books in the hands of pastors and churches to equip them to be faithful stewards of the gospel and the inspired, inerrant, Word of God for this generation and those to come.”
